6 years old
Diagnosis:
Cerebral Palsy
Admission Date:
Dec 2014
Background

Jimmy is a term vaginal delivery at 39 weeks, birth weight 3.2 kg. Umbilical cord wrapped around the neck twice at birth. Apgar scores: 5 at 1 minute (deductions for respiration, muscle tone, reflexes) and 8 at 5 minutes (deductions for muscle tone, reflexes). Post-resuscitation transfer to NICU for 48-hour monitoring, diagnosed with neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) stage I-II. No history of neonatal jaundice or infection.

Pre-Treatment Condition (Before the First Course of Treatment)
  • 1. Non-ambulatory (unable to stand or walk);
  • 2. Dysphagia requiring liquid diet;
  • 3. Dysarthria (unclear speech articulation);
  • 4. Neurogenic bladder/bowel (absent sensation and voluntary control);
  • 5. Bilateral hand hypertonia (restricted extension; incomplete fist formation);
  • 6. Lower limb hypertonia (spastic diplegia pattern).
Treatment Plan
  • Two weeks of stem cell therapy
  • Surgical method: Lumbar puncture and Stereotactic brain surgery
  • Efficacy monitoring plan over 6 to 18 months post-treatment

After the First Course of Treatment(12 months)
After the First Course of Treatment (18 months)

Symptom Improvement
Dysphagia (liquid diet only) Improved swallowing; tolerates solids (vegetables, bread)
Non-ambulatory (unable to stand/walk) Walks with walking aid; independent water intake
Restricted to liquids Transitioning to semi-solid/solid foods
Bilateral hand hypertonia (unable to extend) Reduced hand hypertonia; improved grip strength
Neurogenic bladder/bowel (no voluntary control) Pre-elimination signaling; family-assisted control
Dysarthria (unclear articulation) Marked improvement in pronunciation
Progress Summary & Future Outlook

Given Jimmy's remarkable progress after the first course of treatment, the future looks promising. With continued physical and occupational therapies, he is likely to enhance his standing and walking abilities. In the coming months, he may be able to walk independently for longer distances and with better stability.

Regarding his self-care skills, with consistent training, he may soon be able to manage urination and defecation completely independently. As his muscle tension continues to decrease and strength increases, he will have more precise control over his hand and limb movements, enabling him to perform more complex daily tasks. Overall, with continuous support and treatment, Jimmy has the potential to lead a more independent and fulfilling life.
